The Bittersweet Beauty of Residential Care

By Kayleigh Mullen, Registered Manager at Opal House, Stepping Stones Care

Working in residential care is one of the most rewarding yet bittersweet experiences.

As a Registered Manager at Stepping Stones Care, I’ve had the privilege of supporting children through some of the most challenging and transformative periods of their lives. The children who come into our care do so for a variety of complex and often difficult reasons. Supporting them through their journey, offering consistent nurture, therapeutic guidance, and a safe, stable environment, allows us to be part of remarkable growth and resilience. It is deeply rewarding to see the children in our care begin to trust, heal, and flourish within our homes.

That being said, with progress comes transition, which can be emotionally challenging both for the child and the carers. Whether a child is returning to their family, moving into foster care, or stepping into semi-independent living, their departure marks a significant milestone. While we celebrate these moments as successes—the very outcomes we work toward—they are often bittersweet. As carers, we form strong, meaningful bonds with the children we support, and saying goodbye is never easy. However, it is in these moments that the impact of our work is most evident. Each child who moves on carries with them the strength, stability, and support they’ve gained during their time with us, and that is something as carers we are truly proud of.

That being said, there’s a real sense of pride in knowing we’ve helped lay the foundations for a brighter future for each child that has come into our homes. That’s what residential care is all about and it’s why I’m proud to be part of the journey at Stepping Stones Care.
