Thriving Beyond Our Homes

Continued Care

A Young Man's Journey with Continued Care

By Gurpreet Singh, Director at Stepping Stones Care

At Stepping Stones Care, our commitment to young people doesn’t end when they leave our homes, it evolves. As Director, I’ve seen first-hand how meaningful relationships and consistent support can shape futures. One such story that stands out is of a young man who transitioned from Amber House into independent living, a journey that exemplifies the power of Continued Care.

From the day he arrived, this young man brought energy and heart to Amber House. We watched him grow into a confident, capable individual, sharing in his milestones and memories. Whether it was Bonfire Night, Christmas, or birthdays, he was always a vibrant part of our community, laughing and celebrating alongside staff and peers.

His time with us was filled with enriching experiences—from seaside holidays in Butlins, Burnham-on-Sea, and Bournemouth to cinema trips, bowling nights, football matches, escape rooms, go-karting, and even a VR adventure. These weren’t just leisure moments—they were opportunities to build life skills, resilience, and strong bonds.

He went on to complete his GCSEs and is now pursuing a Level 3 Business course. Looking ahead, he's aiming to begin a Level 3 Gaming course by September 2025. His ambition and determination continue to impress us all.

But at Stepping Stones Care, we believe that care doesn't stop at the door.

Through our Continued Care Support Plan, we’ve stayed closely connected. Our fantastic team at Amber House send birthday cards, letters, and photos from the team to remind him he’s still part of our family. He’s regularly invited back to events - reunions, BBQs, and parties, where he’s always welcomed with open arms.

Every three days, he chats with different team members - keeping that familiar rhythm alive. Through texts and regular check-ins, we ensure he’s safe, well-fed, mentally healthy, and thriving at college.

Our weekly support visits go beyond duty:

  • Picking him up from college

  • Helping with food shopping and laundry

  • Assisting with cleaning and changing bedding

  • Taking walks and supporting with home decorating

  • Monthly lunches and coffee catch-ups

This isn’t about ticking boxes - it’s about standing by someone who still matters to us, deeply. It’s about continuing relationships, celebrating wins, navigating struggles, and ensuring he never feels alone.

At Amber House, and across Stepping Stones Care, our mission is simple: help our young people not just leave well, but live well. We remain present, consistent, and committed, for as long as they want us by their side.
